Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Yusuf, has inaugurated a Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and signed an Executive Order aimed at combating thuggery and other related crimes across the state.
The development was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
Speaking at the inauguration, Yusuf described drug abuse as one of the greatest threats facing the state’s youth, saying it has contributed significantly to violent crime, family disintegration, economic hardship and growing social instability.
He said the newly inaugurated task force would serve as the coordinating body for the state’s anti-drug campaign through intelligence gathering, law enforcement, public sensitisation, rehabilitation programmes and collaboration with security agencies and other relevant stakeholders.
The governor pledged full government support for the task force, including adequate funding, operational vehicles, office accommodation, logistics and security assistance to ensure the effective execution of its mandate.
He also assured members of the committee of operational independence, stressing that addressing drug abuse requires a coordinated, sustained and non-partisan approach.
Yusuf further disclosed that his administration would continue expanding rehabilitation services for individuals battling drug addiction, noting that dedicated treatment centres have already been established for both male and female patients.
On the newly signed Executive Order, the governor said it was designed to strengthen the legal framework for tackling thuggery, dismantling criminal gangs, curbing political violence and enhancing the capacity of security agencies to maintain law and order throughout the state.
Responding on behalf of the committee, Chairman of the task force, Mr. Muhuyi Rimingado, expressed appreciation to the governor for the confidence reposed in the members.
He pledged that the committee would carry out its assignment with integrity, professionalism and transparency.
According to Rimingado, the task force will work closely with security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations, educational institutions and community representatives to address the root causes of drug abuse and promote lasting peace across Kano State.
He described the initiative as a clear demonstration of the Yusuf administration’s commitment to safeguarding the future of young people and strengthening public safety.
