FRSC launches ‘Operation Sanity’ to curb road crashes

The ultimate goal of “Operation Sanity” is to minimise road traffic crashes on highways in Ondo State and across the country

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo State Sector Command, on Monday launched a three-day special enforcement operation, codenamed “Operation Sanity,” aimed at reducing road traffic crashes across the state.

Speaking during the flag-off of the exercise in Akure, the Ondo State Sector Commander, Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, said the operation would specifically target the major traffic offences responsible for crashes rather than general road safety activities.

According to him, the command identified the offences through research, with the enforcement campaign designed to reduce accidents and improve safety on highways across the state.

Ibitoye warned that motorists found violating traffic regulations, particularly those involved in speeding and dangerous driving, would face arrest, fines and other sanctions during the exercise.

He listed the offences to be targeted during the operation to include speeding, dangerous driving, overloading, tyre-related violations, driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to use seat belts, use of mobile phones while driving, route violations and excessive vehicle smoke emission.

The sector commander explained that, alongside enforcement, the operation would also focus on educating motorists on safe driving practices.

He noted that overloading not only endangers passengers and damages vehicles but also contributes to the deterioration of road infrastructure.

Ibitoye urged motorists to exercise patience, obey traffic regulations and avoid any form of distraction while driving, stressing that road safety is a shared responsibility.

The FRSC commander also appealed to all road users to adopt positive driving habits to make the roads safer for everyone.
