The Chief Press Secretary to the Benue State Governor, Tersoo Kula, has charged journalists in the state to revive the vibrancy in its activities which the union was known for by disseminating accurate information to the public especially the giant strides of the Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration for the past one and a half years.
Speaking, Thursday, when he received members of the new executive of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Benue State chapter who were at the Government House in Makurdi on a courtesy visit, Kula, encouraged them to equally revive activities such as the MDA’s, ministerial and local government accountability briefings which were programmes of the union that kept Government accountable.
He thanked members of the new executive for the visit and promised to forward all their demands to the governor for attention.
In a remark, Principal Special Assistant to the governor on Publicity and Communications Strategy, Bridget Ikyado, expressed delight to Benue journalists for accepting to shielt their swords for the purpose of revitalizing the council which was in crisis for many years and their declaration to support the current administration.
She challenged the new NUJ leadership to initiate a programme that will put all sectors of government on their toes for citizens to be kept informed as well as fight the menace of quackery to ensure professionalism.
On his part, the new NUJ Chairman, Benue State Council, Bemdoo Ugber, said the visit was to thank the CPS for his tireless efforts in resolving the leadership tussle at NUJ, affirming that the peace initiative have paved the way for a successful NUJ election which he and other exco members are direct beneficiaries.
Ugber on behalf of Benue journalists, appreciated Governor Hyacinth Alia for initiating the peace process and for approving a minimum wage of N75, 000 to Benue workers as well as payment of the remaining three months salary arrears.
While pledging the union’s unwavering support to the Alia administration by reporting his people oriented policies and programmes to the public, the chairman, appealed to the governor to address pressing issues affecting the union including implementation of wage and hazard allowances for those working in state government media organizations, general welfare of journalists, provision of a new bus for NUJ and renovation of the NUJ Secretariat among others.
