Acting Chairman Benue State Internal Revenue Service, BIRS, Emmanuel Agema, has disclosed that the service would continue to rely on the police as a critical stakeholder to flush out criminal elements perpetrating illegal revenue activities in the state.
Agema who made the disclosure when he led management of the service to pay a fertilization visit to the new commissioner of police Benue State command, Hasan Habanet, commended the police for its efforts in curbing criminality in the state and called on them to redouble efforts in dismantling illegal checkpoints on high ways in the state which he noted have become embarrassing to the state.
The Benue revenue boss lamented that the state has suffered the issue of illegal roadblocks mounted by criminal elements who harassed and extort money from traders as well as motorists plyiny roads in the state, and called on the police to continue to support the service to arrest and prosecute the criminals.
Agema who presented to the commissioner a list of the gazetted BIRS inspection and motoring points across the state, congratulated CP Habanet on his posting to Benue State, explaining to him that the points have mini offices and signpost, indicating their locations which are operated by staff of the service who wear reflective jackets whenever on duty with their staff identity cards on display.
He appealed for support from the new CP to ensure the use of number plates, particularly on motorcycles operating in the state and wished him well as he assumes duty.
Responding, CP Habanet commended the team for the visit, emphasizing the importance of revenue to the government and pledged to sustain the existing synergy between the police and BIRS for enhanced revenue generation in the state.
