365Daily – The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr AbdulRasheed Bawa, has been suspended by President Bola Tinubu.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Willie Basse.
According to him, his removal from office is to allow for proper investigation into his activities as head of the anti-graft agency.
”This follows weighty allegations of abuse of office levelled against him,” the statement explained.
It continued, ”Mr Bawa has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Director, Operations in the Commission, who will oversee the affairs of the Office of the Chairman of the Commission pending the conclusion of the investigation.”
Early signs that all was not well with the commission started to manifest barely a day after the inauguration of the President, Tuesday, May 30. The agency’s Awolowo Road, Ikoyi Lagos office was invaded by officials of the Department of State Services (DSS), who barricaded the entrance with armoured personnel carriers till Tinubu ordered them to vacate the premises.
Bawa may also be getting pay back from top shots whose toes he stepped, including the newly elected Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, who he summoned to answer accusations bordering on fraud in April 2023, as well as the immediate past Governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle, who accused him of demanding bribe from him.
