365Daily – Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has described the first female Vice Chancellor in Nigeria, Professor Grace Alele-Williams, who passed on recently, as a trailblazer.
According to Atiku, her legacies present the promise for the empowerment of the girl-child
The late Alele-Williams was a professor of mathematics and the first Nigerian Woman to be awarded a PhD.
She was appointed as Vice Chancellor of University of Benin in 1985, making her the first woman to become a VC of an African University.
Atiku said in a statement on Saturday, March 26, 2022: “Prof. Grace Alele-Williams was a trailblazer. She was no ordinary woman, indeed an extraordinary Nigerian in every facet.
“The professor of mathematics was the first Nigerian female Vice-Chancellor at the University of Benin and the first Nigerian woman to receive a doctorate. Her legacies present the promise for the empowerment of the girl-child. She will be sorely missed. May her family and friends be comforted, and may her soul rest in peace.”
