The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has passed a bill for Establishing Nasarawa State Customary Courts and for Other Matters Related Thereto.
Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Speaker, announced passage of the bill at plenary in Lafia on Tuesday.
He said, if finally assented to by Gov. Abdullahi Sule, the law would strengthen and empower customary courts in the state.
“It will give more powers to resolve all issues and disputes related to the people’s tradition or custom under trained lawyers.”
He said under the new law, customary courts would have vested jurisdiction to hear and determine both criminal and civil cases under the native law and custom.
“A Bill for a Law to Establish Nasarawa State Customary Courts Law and for Other Matters Related Thereto, undergoes third reading and passed,” the speaker said.
He directed the Clerk of the House to produce a clean copy of the bill for the governor’s assent.
Earlier, Alhaji Tanko Tunga (APC-Awe North), the Majority Leader of the House, moved the motion for the bill to scale third reading.
Mr Abel Bala (PDP-Nassarawa Eggon West), the Minority Leader of the House, seconded the motion.
