Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has confirmed that three out of the five students are in Police custody over the death of Sylvester Oromoni Jnr.
He also added that the two others are currently at large.
He made this known on Tuesday, December 7, 2021, in Lagos State.
Sylvester Oromoni was allegedly attacked by senior students of Dowen College, leading to internal injuries that reportedly resulted in his death.
The late Sylvester Oromoni had mentioned five senior students allegedly responsible for the injuries he sustained when he was attacked at the Dowen College shortly before he died.
The Lagos State government has since shut down the school, while the police have also commenced investigation into the matter.
There are unconfirmed reports in the social media that some of the alleged culprits may have been taken abroad by their parents in order to evade arrest.
The police did not disclose the names of the students already taken into custody but on Monday, the family of former Ogun Senator, the late Buruji Kashamu, denied that their son, Michael, who was named as one of the five students at Dowen College culpable in the beating that led to the death of Sylvester, was involved in the incident.
In a statement signed by Mutairu Kashamu, the family said the accused did not beat or bully Oromoni as alleged.
Meanwhile, the Oromoni family has hired the human rights lawyer and activist, Femi Falana, to prosecute the case against the school.
Falana has demanded a coroner’s inquest into circumstances surrounding Sylvester’s death.
In a letter dated December 6, 2021, sent to the Chief Coroner of Lagos State, Justice Mojisola Dada, Falana, who said he has been briefed by Sylvester Oromoni’s family, said the circumstances leading to the death of the boy demands that the inquest be conducted.
