365Daily – The Army Major abducted by bandits during an incasion of the Nigeria Defense Academy, CL Datong, has regained freedom.
According to the Deputy Director Army Public Relations 1 Division, Nigerian Army, Colonel Ezindu Idimah, Datong was rescued by troops on Friday night.
Idimah added that the rescue operation led to the destruction of several identified bandits’ camps in Afaka- Birnin Gwari areas of the Kaduna State.
Major Datong’s release was confirmed by his wife who posted at 1:45am on Saturday, September 18, 2021: “I can now confirm that my husband is free.”
Two senior officers were shot dead during the incident which occurred on August 24, 2021.
Speaking on the rescue operation, Col. Idimah said troops, in a joint force with the Air Task Force, Department of State Services and other security agencies, arrived at a camp suspected to be the location where Maj CL Datong was being held.
“At the camp, the troops exchanged fire with the bandits and overwhelmed them with superior fire.
“In the process, the gallant troops were able to rescue the abducted officer. However, the officer sustained a minor injury but he has been treated in a medical facility and handed over to NDA for further action,” he said.
He commended the efforts of the NAF, DSS , Nigerian Police and “patriotic Nigerians” for their invaluable support which contributed to the success of this operation, saying the operation will continue until they capture or neutralise the assailants behind the NDA incident.
