365Daily – The Senate Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the screening of Lauretta Onochie and other nominees of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The screening is coming nine months after Buhari forwarded a request to the Red Chamber to confirm the nominees.

President Buhari had, on October 12, 2020, nominated Onochie (South-south), Professor Muhammad Sani Kallah (North-west), Professor Kunle Cornelius Ajayi (South-west), Saidu Babura Ahmad (Jigawa), Prof. Sani Muhammad Adam (North-central) and Dr. Baba Bila (North-east) as national commissioners of INEC.

Onochie’s nomination had sparked an outrage from the opposition lawmakers and civil society groups, who argued that she was “too partisan” to be a commissioner in an important institution like INEC.

Last week, PDP leaders staged a peaceful protest at the National Assembly to demand her rejection.
