The sentence was given by a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sitting in Apo, Abuja, on Tuesday, June 22, 2021.
Lawan was also ordered to restitute the $500, 000 bribe to the Federal Government.
Lawan was a four-term member of the House of Representatives who represented Bagwai/Shanono Federal Constituency of Kano State between 1999 and 2015.
He was the Chairman of the House Adhoc Committee on Fuel Subsidy when the $500,000 bribe scandal involving him and Otedola broke.
Lawan was alleged to have demanded $3 million bribe from the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Limited, Femi Otedola.
However, he was reported to have collected $500,000 in 2 tranches to remove Otedola’s companies’ names from the list of firms indicted by the ad hoc committee for allegedly abusing the fuel subsidy regime in 2012.
After a trial spanning years, the presiding Judge, Justice Angela Otaluka, convicted Lawan on the three-count charge on which he was tried by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC).
Lawan was convicted in counts one and two and five years on count three.
