USAID asks FG to immediately reverse Twitter ban

365Daily – The Administrator of the US Agency for International Development, Samantha Power, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to reverse its decision to ban Twitter’s operation in Nigeria.

Power conveyed this in a Twitter post on her handle on Wednesday, June 9, 2021.

“There are nearly 40 million Twitter users in #Nigeria, and the country is home to Africa’s largest tech hub.

“This suspension is nothing more than state-sanctioned denial of free speech and should be reversed immediately. #KeepItOn,” she tweeted.

The Federal Government last week suspended Twitter use in Nigeria in an announcement made by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed.

However, prominent Nigerians have taken a stand against the ban for being in contravention of the right to free speech and other fundamental human rights.

In a reaction to the suspension, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Projects (SERAP) and 176 Concerned Nigerians on Tuesday, June 8, 2021, filed a suit against the FG in the Economic Community of West African States, seeking to quash the ban.
