Insecurity: UNIJOS suspends undergraduate lectures

365Daily – Authorities of the University of Jos in Plateau State have suspended academic activities for undergraduate programmes in the institution.

365Daily gathered that the decision to suspend academic activities in the university was taken during an emergency meeting by the university Senate on Wednesday, May 19, 2021.

Speaking on the development, the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the institution, Dr. Lazarus Maigoro, said: “I just heard of the closing of academic activities for undergraduate students in the university and the information is true.”

A member of the University’s Senate, who attended the meeting where the decision to shut down the academic activities was taken, also confirmed the development.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, he said post-graduate academic activities in the institution were not affected by the suspension.

“The university closed down the hostels about two weeks ago because of insecurity. And now, the school has resumed and students are finding it difficult to come for lectures because they don’t have a place to stay,” the council member stated.

He added: “And given that the university is surrounded by a lot of unfriendly neighbours, the Senate met today (Wednesday) and took the decision to shut down the academic activities in the institution for two weeks, hoping that the security will improve so that normal academic activities will resume again. But the PG programmes are ongoing because they are not on campus and don’t stay in the hostel.”
