Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit and the visiting UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen on Thursday stressed the importance of reaching a peaceful settlement for Syria.
The officials discussed the recent developments in the war-torn country during the meeting, especially the steps of drafting new Syrian constitution and preparing for holding elections, according to a statement by the League.
The talks also touched upon the League’s moves for icing the current stalemate conditions in Syria after ten years of conflicts that imposed heavy burdens on the Syrian people at all levels, especially the displaced and the refugees, the statement said.
“There is no decisive military solution for the conflict in Syria,” said Aboul-Gheit, adding that the controversial issues require flexibility and consensus among the foreign parties with presence in Syria.
Pedersen said that both the government and the opposition in Syria should realise the seriousness of the current situation and the necessity for reaching a compromise for restoring normal life, ending the suffering of Syrians inside and outside the country. (Xinhua/NAN)
