The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commenced implementation of the 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures and Tariff Amendments approved by President Bola Tinubu, a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s trade and fiscal framework.
The National Public Relations Officer of the service, Abdullahi Maiwada, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, saying the new measures are designed to enhance economic competitiveness, boost revenue generation, and improve trade administration.
According to him, the reforms align Nigeria’s tariff regime with regional and international obligations while supporting legitimate trade and effective fiscal administration across the country.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, had recently announced the revised import duties while defending the service’s 2026 budget proposal before the National Assembly. He explained that the revised tariff structure forms part of the Federal Government’s broader fiscal policy agenda for 2026 and is expected to stimulate economic growth.

He noted that the approved measures include the Revised Import Adjustment Tax List for the implementation of the ECOWAS Common External Tariff (2022–2027), the Revised National List under the ECOWAS Common External Tariff framework, and the Revised Import Prohibition List (Trade).
The reforms also cover the Revised List of Goods Liable to Excise Duty, the introduction of a Green Tax surcharge on vehicles with engine capacities above 2,000cc, and the Revised Export Prohibition List.
Maiwada urged importers, exporters, manufacturers, licensed customs agents, and other stakeholders to familiarise themselves with the amended tariff schedules and ensure full compliance with the applicable fiscal and regulatory requirements.
To promote transparency and facilitate seamless implementation, he said the Nigeria Customs Service has made the complete 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures and Tariff Amendments available for public access on its official website.
He encouraged stakeholders to carefully study the provisions to ensure compliance with the approved fiscal measures and tariff changes.
Maiwada reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Customs Service to supporting government economic policies through efficient trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.
He added that the successful implementation of the reforms would require the cooperation of all stakeholders in building a more competitive, transparent, and sustainable Nigerian economy.
