The Kwara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has handled more than 100 gender-related cases between January and June 2026, recording significant successes in combating gender-based violence and protecting vulnerable persons across the state.
Addressing journalists during a media briefing at the State Command Headquarters in Ilorin on Tuesday, State Commandant Abbas Nda Mohammed disclosed that the Command secured a life imprisonment sentence against a convicted sexual offender during the six months, describing the conviction as a demonstration of the Corps’ unwavering commitment to ensuring justice for victims of sexual and gender-based violence.
Providing a breakdown of cases handled by the Command’s Gender Unit, the Commandant said 36 cases of domestic violence were recorded, with 12 currently undergoing mediation while the remaining cases have been concluded.
He also disclosed that the Command handled 19 child custody disputes, of which 15 have been successfully resolved, while four cases are still pending.
According to him, the Gender Unit received 38 cases of child abandonment within the review period. Six of the cases have been resolved, while investigations and other necessary interventions are ongoing to ensure the safety and welfare of the affected children.
Commandant Abbas further revealed that the Command recorded nine abduction cases, noting that prompt intervention by NSCDC personnel led to the successful reunion of four victims with their families.
In addition, he said eight cases involving rape, sexual assault and child molestation are currently before competent courts for prosecution, emphasizing that the Command remains determined to ensure perpetrators face the full weight of the law.
He commended officers of the Gender Unit for their professionalism, dedication and commitment in handling sensitive cases, urging residents of the state to promptly report incidents of domestic violence, child abuse, sexual offences and other forms of gender-based violence to the NSCDC for immediate intervention.
The Commandant reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to safeguarding the rights, dignity and welfare of women, children and other vulnerable members of society through thorough investigations, strategic collaboration with relevant stakeholders and diligent enforcement of the law.
