365Daily – The Senate has endorsed a combined budget of N403.1 billion for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) for the 2025 and 2026 fiscal years, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force in tackling terrorism, kidnapping, banditry, and other security threats across the country.
The approval followed the consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, presented by the committee’s Vice Chairman, Senator Yunus Akintunde, on behalf of the Chairman, Senator Abdulhamid Mallam Madori, in plenary on Thursday.
After deliberations, the Senate approved N170.1 billion for the 2025 fiscal year and N233.9 billion for the 2026 fiscal year.
Presenting the committee’s report, Akintunde stated that the proposed budgets were thoroughly scrutinised and found to be in line with the statutory mandate of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund.
He explained that the Fund is expected to support the Nigeria Police Force through the procurement of operational vehicles and equipment, rehabilitation of police barracks and stations, training and retraining of personnel, and other interventions aimed at improving internal security and safeguarding lives and property.
A breakdown of the approved estimates shows that the 2025 budget allocates N159.7 billion for capital projects and N10.36 billion for recurrent expenditure, while the 2026 budget provides N222.9 billion for capital projects and N11.07 billion for recurrent costs.
The committee further noted that the implementation of the budgets would be financed through statutory funding sources, including allocations from the Federation Account, Value Added Tax (VAT), contributions from the net profits of companies operating in Nigeria, as well as grants, donations, and other approved sources.
Following the adoption of the report, President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, expressed confidence that the approved funding would improve the provision of operational equipment, infrastructure, and personnel development for the Nigeria Police Force.
He said the investment would further strengthen the capacity of security agencies to combat terrorism, kidnapping, and other criminal activities while enhancing public safety across the country.
