365Daily – Governors of northern states have condemned Monday’s deadly explosions in Maiduguri, describing the coordinated attacks as barbaric and a threat to ongoing efforts to restore peace in Nigeria’s North-East.
The condemnation was issued by the Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, following the explosions that struck multiple locations across the Borno State capital on Monday evening.
The blasts reportedly occurred almost simultaneously near the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital gate, the Monday Market Roundabout, and the Post Office area—locations known for heavy civilian activity.
Security sources and local reports indicate that the attacks left several people dead, with many others injured, as emergency responders battled to evacuate victims and secure the affected areas. While the exact casualty figures were still being verified as of Tuesday, the incident marks one of the most significant attacks in Maiduguri in recent months.
Maiduguri, the epicentre of Nigeria’s long-running insurgency, has witnessed a relative lull in large-scale attacks in recent years due to intensified military operations against extremist groups such as Boko Haram and its splinter faction, Islamic State West Africa Province.
However, analysts have warned that the groups retain the capacity to carry out sporadic high-impact assaults, particularly targeting soft civilian locations.
Reacting to the development, Yahaya described the explosions as “heinous, barbaric and a direct assault on innocent lives.”
“This senseless act of violence is not only reprehensible but a cruel attempt to instill fear and disrupt the fragile peace being restored in the North-East. It is an attack on our collective humanity and must be condemned in the strongest terms,” he said.
He extended condolences to the government and people of Borno State, particularly families who lost loved ones, and sympathised with those receiving treatment in hospitals.
The governor also commended first responders and security agencies for their swift intervention, noting that their actions helped manage the immediate aftermath of the explosions.
He reaffirmed the commitment of northern governors to work closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to confront terrorism and other forms of criminality threatening the region.
“Now, more than ever, we must stand united against forces of terror. Our resolve to secure our region remains unshaken, and together, we shall overcome these cowardly acts,” he added.
Yahaya urged residents to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding, while cooperating with security agencies by providing credible information to aid ongoing investigations.
The latest attack underscores persistent security challenges in the North-East, despite years of counter-insurgency operations, and has renewed calls for intensified intelligence gathering and coordinated responses to prevent further attacks.
