365Daily – Men of the Nigeria Police Force on Thursday arrested activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, at the Federal High Court in Abuja, barely days after he led a protest demanding the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Mr Sowore’s arrest was made public by his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, who announced it in a post on social media Thursday morning.
“Omoyele Sowore just arrested at the Federal High Court by the Nigerian Police. When will the Nigerian police stop acting jobless?” Mr Adeyanju wrote.
He, however, did not state the reason for the arrest, but said the police prevented him from seeing his client.
Another of Mr Sowore’s lawyers, Tope Temokun, confirmed the incident, stating that the activist was taken away by armed officers acting on the orders of the FCT Commissioner of Police.
“He was picked up not too long ago by armed policemen acting under the instructions of the commissioner of police in the FCT,” Mr Temokun said.
Mr Sowore’s detention follows Monday’s #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja, which led to the shutdown of parts of the Federal Secretariat and National Assembly complex. During the demonstration, Mr Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, and his younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu, were also arrested and later remanded in Kuje Prison
