Attorney General, Commissioner for Justice and Public Order of Benue State, Fidelis Mnyim has explained that the vehicles that were recently donated to the state judiciary by Governor Hyacinth Alia was not in anyway to undermine the judicial autonomy in place as viewed in some quarters, describing the action as demonstration of support and commitment as he promised on assumption of office.
Mnyim, who made the clarification while reacting to allegations by Professor Ernest Ojukwu, SAN, challenging why Governor Alia is still buying vehicles for the judiciary despite the autonomy to the Benue Judiciary, explained that the gesture was an additional benevolence to the judiciary.
According to Mnyim, Governor Alia’s gesture was particularly significant to the fact that the judiciary would still receive her complete share of funds accruing to it from the FAAC and IGR, proportionate to the percentage of its budget for the month.
He further pointed out that the judiciary, with the autonomy has the financial capacity to procure vehicles of their choice but explained that the governor’s decision for procuring the vehicles was to demonstrate his commitment to the judiciary by supplementing the financial autonomy, describing the gesture as a magnanimous donation which is designed to inspire the judiciary to thrive for excellence in their service delivery to the people.
The justice commissioner argued that the governor’s benevolence has extended beyond the judiciary, stressing that the present administration has equally implemented various initiatives aimed at enhancing staff welfare for effective service delivery across all sectors, adding that Governor Alia’s unwavering dedication to fostering conducive environment to promote justice, equity and progress of the state is worth commendation.
