Chairman, Kebbi state chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, NANNM, Comrade Kelani Abdul Waliyu, has handed down commendations to Kebbi state government for agreeing to close remuneration gap between nurses in the state and those in tertiary health facilities.
Waliyu spoke on the sidelines on Wednesday at the symbolic May Day celebrations held at Haliru Abdu Stadium, Birnin Kebbi.
He added that, part of the efforts to reposition health sector in Kebbi began with the payment of backlog of students’ nurses and automatic employment for nurses and midwives in the state to encourage them to pay attention to their studies.
Speaking further, the unionist said that over the years, trained and experienced nurses and midwives had left the state service for greener pastures, creating more manpower problems since already nurses and midwives are in short supply.
“We are excited because the government have agreed to close remuneration gap to halt brain drain which is inimical to proper and adequate healthcare delivery in the state”.
He appeal to the governor to fully implement the nurses salaries structure approved nationally as well as expansion of hospitals which is ongoing and life insurance cover due to the hazards nurses and midwives are exposed to as they discharge their official duties.
He commended the national headquarters of NANNM for their moral support and encouragement and urged nurses and midwives to remain steadfast and dedicated to their duties of saving lives and for care for the patients.
