365Daily – Top level stakeholders of Labour Party (LP) have resolved to fill the leadership tussle between some party leaders and that of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) by constituting an interim Transition Committee to oversee its affairs.
The committee, which has three months to conduct a national convention from ward to national convention, is to be under the leadership of the NLC Political Commission.
This was contained in a communique issued at the end of a stakeholders meeting of the Labour Party on Monday, April 8, 2024, in Abuja.
It was signed by Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, for Chairman, NLC Political Commission; former NLC President, Comrade Abdulwahed Omar and Chairman, Board of Trustees of Labour Party, Comrade S. O. Z Ejiofor.
Other signatories are National Coordinator, CSF, Engr. Gambo D. Balarabe; Coordinator, Obidient Movement, Dr. Moses Paul (Mo); LP Plateau State Governorship Candidate, Chief Yohanna Margif; Coordinator, LPPMC, Dr Kingsley Okundaye; LP Kaduna State Governorship Candidate, Hon. Jonathan Asake and representative of Disabled Persons in LP, Barr. Ihekwoaba Paul.
The communique stated that owing to the current vacuum in the leadership of the party, the NLC Political Commission which is duly recognised as its registered trustee and affirmed by the Federal High Court, convened the stakeholders meeting to address the leadership void in Labour Party and to discuss its repositioning to enable it deliver on its mandate as the political vehicle for the emancipation of Nigerian workers and people.
It noted the vacuum in the leadership of LP following the expiration of the “supposed tenure” of the immediate past National Working Committee (NWC) and resolved that in order to reposition the party from “a mere platform for contesting elections to a viable political vehicle for the emancipation of Nigerian workers and people,” the following actions should be taken:
“Constitution of a Transition Committee under the leadership of NLC Political Commission, working with all stakeholders, with a mandate to set up structures at national, state, local government and ward levels for the conduct of an all-inclusive and expansive national convention of the Labour Party.”
It also denounced the “purported LP national convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State,” describing it as inconsequential.
Furthermore, it put the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and all relevant security organisations in Nigeria on notice, saying it will also communicate in writing, that they should recognise the Transition Committee as the interim leadership of the party pending “the conduct of an all-inclusive and expansive national convention.”
The Transition Committee was also saddled with the responsibility of taking full charge of Labour Party secretariats nationwide, recovering assets of all its properties, ensuring prosecutions of cases of fraud, impersonation and forgery of government documents pending against “a few discredited former officers of the Labour Party” as demanded by its leader, Peter Obi .
It was also mandated to mobilise for 10 million members of the party through the process of revalidation of current members of LP and the registration of new members through the issuance of new membership cards and receipt of membership dues for the purpose of the conduct of the national convention in Abuja.
The stakeholders recommended, affirmed and commended the support of critical stakeholders in the party for their continued support and faith in it, while assuring that it remains a party for all Nigerians regardless of ethnic, religious, regional, social and economic orientation or status.
