365Daily – It was mixed emotions for Cameroonian-born Switzerland striker, Breel Donald Embolo, who scored the winning lone goal at the Qatar 2022 World Cup encounter between both nations and he showed that by not celebrating after the goal!
While it was a dream come true for the young footballer to score at the world stage, scoring against his original home country has apparently turned the feat into a bitter sweet experience which both his family and the entire Cameroonian nation would not forget in a hurry.
A video clip sighted by 365Daily indicated that his goal has elicited enormous outrage in Cameroon, leading to a riotous attack on Embolo’s family house in Cameroon.
Angry football fans were seen in the video, surrounding his family house, raining curses and throwing stones at the building.
Embolo, born in Yaounde but raised in Basel, struck three minutes into the second half of the game, from a Xherdan Shaqiri cut-back, to put the Swiss top of the group.
The 25-year-old refused to celebrate the goal on his 60th international appearance, lifting his hands in the air and frowning as the small group of Swiss fans cheered wildly at Al Janoub Stadium.
“We know his story. I told him before the game ‘Breel, friendship until the start, then they are your opponents,” the Switzerland coach Murat Yakin had said after the match.
He added, “Football writes such stories but he completed his mission. I am very happy with his performance.”
Embolo moved with his family to France before finally settling in Switzerland. After working his way through their junior teams, the footballer made his professional debut for Basel in March 2014, and won the Swiss Super League in all three of his first seasons before moving to Schalke 04 for an initial €20 million. Shortly after moving to the Bundesliga, he suffered an ankle injury that ruled him out for nearly a year.
He made his senior international debut in March 2015 and represented Switzerland at UEFA Euro 2016, the 2018 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
