Military checkpoint claims many lives, 20 vehicles burnt in Kogi

An eyewitness said though the incident occurred around 3 p.m, the fire was still raging at the time he was making a video of it around 5 p.m

A roadblock set up by military personnel at Ochadamu on the popular Lokoja-Anyigba/Itobe Highway in the Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi has caused a fatal accident that claimed many lives, while over 20 vehicles were burnt.

It was learnt that the accident happened around 3 p.m. on Thursday after a disagreement between the military men and petrol tanker drivers.

According to an eyewitness, the soldiers shot two tanker drivers and this made the colleagues of the victims angry.

They subsequently barricaded the highway with a tanker loaded with fuel.

A few moments later, a speeding truck ran into the petrol tanker causing it to explode.

This caused an inferno that killed many people and burnt over 20 vehicles.

An eyewitness said though the incident occurred around 3 p.m, the fire was still raging at the time he was making a video of it around 5 p.m.

“Nobody has come to try anything even to clear the road,” he said with a note of frustration.

Reacting to the incident, the Federal Road Safety Corps said their personnel visited the scene of the accident but could not tell the total number of casualties.
