365Daily – Former Nigerian Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, had called on the Benin Republic authorities to respect the civil liberties and rights of Sunday Adeyemo (Sunday Igboho), Yoruba secessionist advocate, arrested in Cotonou recently.
Fani-Kayode warned that “The Beninoise Government must be fair in their actions. Igboho must not be denied access to his doctors and lawyers and he must not be tortured, brutalised, humiliated or treated with contempt.”
Igboho, who was recently declared wanted by the Nigerian security authorities over his secessionist agenda and activities alleged to pose security threat to the corporate existence of Nigeria, was arrested at the airport in Benin Republic capital, with his wife, a German citizen, on their way to Europe.
Since his arrest in the West African country, there have been reports alleging inhuman treatment against him, necessitating the concern raised by Fani-Kayode.
According to the former Minister who identifies as Igboho’s supporter, the embattled Yoruba rights activist should be treated “with respect and decorum.”
Those rights, he said, “are protected under international laws and protocols, including the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights to which the Benin Republic is a signatory.
“The whole world is watching and we shall continue to monitor the events with concern and keen interest.’
