Boat mishap: Sokoto Govt. to provide life jackets for waterway travellers in the state

365Daily – The Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has directed the Ministry of Local Government and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), to provide life jackets for travellers plying the waterways in the state.

He also directed that such travels should be done in motor boats instead of canoes.

Tambuwal gave the orders on Friday, June 4, 2021, during a condolence visit to victims of a boat mishap in which 13 people traveling from Dorowa to Ginga village in Shagari local government area of the state died.

The Governor, according to a press statement issued by his Special Adviser Media and Publicity, Muhammad Bello, said the facilities will be distributed to people living in riverine areas in the state since the raining season has started.

Bello added: ”’The Governor, who condoled with the people of the town over the incident, directed the state Ministry for Local Government, headed by the state Deputy Governor, Hon. Manir Muhammad Dan’Iya, who accompanied him during the condolence visit, in collaboration with the State Emergency Relief Agency, to provide motor boats and life jackets to the local government areas of the state where passengers have to cross rivers, lakes and ponds.

”The Governor also charged people to always take precautionary measures while being transported by boats.

”Gov. Tambuwal, while condoling people of the area, prayed Allah to grant the deceased Jannatul firdausi.

”He also prayed to Allah to prevent future occurrence.”
