The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Abdullahi Gana Muhammadu, has ordered the temporary suspension of its officers involved in the attack of Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) which occurred on Tuesday at Kugbo, Abuja.
The CG also directed that an enquiry should be opened on the incident, while the vehicle which conveyed the alleged attackers should be seized and its driver detained.
A press statement issued on Tuesday by his Media Aide, Ekunola Gbenga, also conveyed Gana’s assurance that everything humanly possible will be done to ensure that justice prevails in the case.
“The Commandant General therefore apologizes to management and men of VIO and assured them of the Corps maximum cooperation and support in discharging their constitutional duties,” it added.
The head of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Traffic Management Team, Ikharo Attah, had posted news about the attack yesterday on his Facebook page.
The traffic team comprises of officials of various traffic management and law enforcement agencies in the country. They are stationed across points in the territory where gridlocks occur, especially in the Kugbo axis where the incident took place.
He wrote, “This evening at about 4.40pm at Kugbo slope in Abuja, some civil Defence personnel beat up traffic officers, injured them and damaged their official vehicle.
The men were on “Truck timing and Traffic free flow operations” when the NSCDC bus carrying officials came and insisted on taking unapproved path.
“When they were prevented from breaking the law, they got angry and descended cruelly on the Road traffic officers from the FCT department of Road traffic services (DRTS).
The sprayed teargas into the eyes of one of the traffic officers.
They threatened to deal with the personnel more severely next time as the drove away.
The FCT traffic management team condemned in totality this barbaric Act.”
Kugbo is along the Nyanya/Mararaba highway.
