365Daily – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that it has completed its election timetable and schedule of activities, noting that preparations for the polls are advancing steadily even as it awaits legislative action on the proposed changes to the electoral law.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made this known on Wednesday in Abuja during a stakeholders’ engagement with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), where he outlined the commission’s state of readiness ahead of the 2027 elections.
Amupitan explained that INEC has already forwarded its recommendations on the Electoral Act amendment to the National Assembly, stressing that the timing of the passage of the bill remains crucial to certain aspects of election planning.
He said while the commission has drawn up a comprehensive timetable, some elements of the schedule may need to be reviewed depending on when the amended law is passed by lawmakers and subsequently assented to by the President.
The INEC chairman, however, assured stakeholders that the delay would not undermine the commission’s resolve to deliver credible, free and fair elections, adding that INEC remains firmly committed to discharging its constitutional responsibilities.
According to him, until the amended Electoral Act becomes law, the commission will continue to carry out its duties strictly in accordance with the provisions of the existing legal framework.
Amupitan also underscored the importance of sustained engagement with civil society organisations and other stakeholders, describing their collaboration as vital to deepening transparency and strengthening public confidence in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 polls.
