The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, has expressed delight with the improved budgetary allocation to sports in the 2025 budget, signed by President Bola Tinubu.
In a communique issued at the end of its full council meeting held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, SWAN commended the president for the increased funding, describing the move as a step in the right direction.
“The communique signed by Chimezie Anaso, chairman of the drafting committee and Hembadoon Orsar, secretary, issued Thursday, urged sustained approach with more funding for Nigeria sports as a vital means of eliminating social vices which also reduces insecurity to the barest minimum in parts of Nigeria.
The meeting, chaired by SWAN National President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, was attended by delegates from all state chapters across the country.
SWAN also congratulated the leadership of the National Sports Commission, headed by its chairman, Shehu Dikko, and Director-General, Bukola Olopade, for their efforts in developing Nigerian sports.
The association noted efforts to ensure Nigeria qualifies for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and urged sustained focus by the Super Eagles, Nigeria Football Federation, and all stakeholders involved.
SWAN also commended sports federations such as the Nigeria Wrestling Federation and Nigeria Volleyball Federation for their immediate impact after recent elections, while urging others to be more proactive in discovering and nurturing talents.
The association celebrated its 60th Anniversary, paying tribute to founding fathers and veterans for their contributions to its growth and legacy.
In a related development, SWAN reinstated its deputy president, Bonny Nyong, after he tendered an unreserved apology for his suspension in May 2024.
The association announced that registration for the 2026 membership year would commence in November 2025, with processes to be coordinated through state chapters.
