Benue State Governor, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, has reaffirmed commitment of his administration to the development of sports in the state generally, describing sports as a unifying factor and a means to eliminating social vices such as youth restiveness, cultism and other criminal activities.

Governor Alia who made the reaffirmation Sunday while declaring open this year’s Governor’s Cup competition held at the JS Tarka Stadium Gboko, expressed delight that his desire to revive the competition which went moribund for many years has come to fruition, stressing that the competition will identify talents to be harnessed to the benefit of the state, country and the youth themselves.

Alia restated his administration’s commitment to the development of sports in the state and promised to revive all aspects of sports as well as to fix sports infrastructure for youths to showcase their talents for better benefits, assuring that infrastructure at the Aper Aku, Stadium under renovation and other sporting facilities both at Akume Atongo and JS Tarka Stadiums in Katsina-ala and Gboko local government areas would equally receive face lift.

The governor also expressed satisfaction with the technical support of Benue State Football Association, BSFA, its chairman Paul Edeh, board members, referees, coaches and technical assistants who have made the tournament a success, expressing happiness with the zeal demonstrated by the youth and assured Benue people of sustenance.

Also speaking, commissioner for Youths, Sports and Creativity, Terkimbi Ikyange, commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for reviving the Governor’s Cup, expressed optimism that the competition will bring serious economic turnaround for youth in the area of job creation as well as to reduce restiveness and insecurity.

On his part, Paul Edeh, expressed appreciation to Governor Alia for fulfilling his promise by reviving the tournament, describing the action as sign of good leadership and commitment to the development of sports in the state.
