Protest: SSANU, NASU ground academic activities

We gather here to protest non-payments of our withheld salaries by the federal government despite several engagements to avoid going to the streets

Hundreds of non-teaching staff, comprising Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU and Non-Academic Staff Union NASU of the Federal University Birnin Kebbi, on Tuesday brought academic activities in the tertiary institution to a halt.

The symbolic protest led by the state chapter Chairman, Alhaji Aliyu Attahiru Turaki, had all the university gates blocked disallowing in and out flow of human and vehicular traffic thus halted all academic and administrative work in the university.

Protesters holding placards with different inscriptions chided President Bola Tinubu-led government for intentionally reneging on pledges made to include payment of arrears of their salaries withheld held during the nationwide strike of the body.

“We gather here to protest non-payments of our withheld salaries by the federal government despite several engagements to avoid going to the streets. We are calling on the federal government to as a matter of urgency pay us our withheld salaries and meet our other demands.”

On the next line of action after the protest, Turaki said the mother union would communicate further action, he urged all his members to endure whatever it is to succeed in the struggle.

The joint protest was also attended by NASU chairman, Hashima Abubakar and hundreds of their members as they both have similar demands.

Students and teaching staff were stranded as protesters ground academic and administrative activities in the university.
