365Daily – In appreciation for their performance at the just concluded 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Côte d’Ivoire, President Bola Tinubu has awarded members of the national team, Super Eagles, and their officials with the prestigious national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON).
The national football team came second in the competition, losing the position to the host country.
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, also granted each member of the team a plot of land.
Tinubu, while receiving the team on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at the State House, Abuja, said he was proud of them, especially for their role in fostering unity in the country.
He commended their team spirit, while encouraging them to hold their heads high.
In his remarks, the vice captain of the Super Eagles, William Troost-Ekong, who was the most valuable player in the competition, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his support, saying he desired to present a trophy to him rather than a silver medal.
Vice-President Kashim Shettima; Secretary to the government of the Federation, George Akume; Minister of Sport, John Enoh; were at the reception.
