Women rights group empowers 5,000 Kebbi widows, divorcees

In efforts to reduce the suffering of women particularly widows and divorcees, a women rights group Mata Zalla said it has empowered over 5,000 economically vulnerable women in the society to enable them to live decent life.

Speaking to our correspondent in Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi state coordinator of the group, Ahmed Abdulllahi, said that vulnerable women in the state were trained and given empowerments to enable them cater for the education and feeding of their children.

“The women are economically weak, and if left without support the male gender may take advantage of their condition to lure them into prostitution hence our reason to train and empower them” he said.

He added that part of the corporate social responsibility of the women rights group include giving protection to women against domestic violence such as rape, and bullying by their spouses at home for the married couples.

He noted that the association with a membership strength of over eight thousand is a self sponsored group except support they get from well spirited individuals particularly the wife of Kebbi State Governor, Hajiya Nafisa Nasir Idris who gave them a huge financial support which was used in training the widows and divorcees.

He said this support was also extend to girl-child education and voter education awareness campaigns where the 20 local government councils in Kebbi state received support to facilitate their movement to those areas to create awareness to women in the rural areas to come out enmasse to register or renew their voters’ cards ahead 2027 general elections.

He urged women to come out and register with the association in order to benefit from the help they are rendering to vulnerable women in the society.
