365Daily – The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has described the passing of Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo, leader of the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, as the end of an era in Nigeria’s political and democratic history.
Chief Adebanjo, a revered elder statesman and nationalist, died at the age of 96 on Friday, February 14, 2025, at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State.
In a condolence message issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, on Friday, February 14, 2024, Speaker Abbas hailed the contributions of Chief Adebanjo to Nigeria’s democracy, describing him as a tireless advocate for justice, unity, and equity among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and religious groups.
The Speaker noted Chief Adebanjo’s pivotal role, alongside other progressive leaders, in Nigeria’s democratic struggles, especially in the fight for the return of civil rule. Even in his later years, Speaker Abbas said, the Afenifere leader remained an influential voice on national issues, offering valuable insights that guided governance and public policy.
Speaker Abbas extended his condolences to the Adebanjo family, Afenifere, and the people and government of Ogun State, where Chief Adebanjo hailed from. He prayed for the repose of his soul and for strength for his loved ones to bear the loss.
Chief Adebanjo, a seasoned lawyer, was a close associate of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, former Premier of the defunct Western Region, and played a crucial role in the formation of the Action Group and Afenifere.
He is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
