365Daily – In a move seen by many as a devious political maneuver, the Anambra State Government has sealed the Labour Party office in the state. This development comes ahead of the September local government election in the state.
Observers believe this action may be linked to Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s alleged efforts to undermine the political influence of Peter Obi, a former governor of the state and presidential candidate of LP ,bwhose movement has gained significant popularity nationwide, particularly in Anambra State.
Additionally, the state government has also sealed the political office of Chief Edozie Njoku, the newly declared National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), in a move seen as a challenge to Governor Soludo’s preferred factional chairman.
These actions have sparked speculation about Governor Soludo’s intentions and his stance on political opposition in the state.
A statement by the Labour Party’s State Secretary, C .J Okoli Akirika Esq, said the action which was carried out on “Tuesday was done without notice, warning, nor any form of engagement with the Labour Party.”
He said further, “The agents of the Anambra State Government accompanied by men dressed in soldiers uniform stormed the Labour Party Anambra State Office and in a maniacal, frenzied and frenetic commando like operation, chased away the staff in the office and sealed the office
“It is rather unfortunate, bizarre, and brazen that the Anambra State Government, which is fruitlessly seeking to truncate statutorily emplaced procedures to select Local Government Chairmen and councillors in the deviously convoluted LG election, is now mindlessly resorting to underhand, illegal and obnoxious intimidation.
“While appealing to teeming Labour Party members, supporters, sympathisers, stakeholders and Ndi Anambra in general, the State Leadership of our great Labour Party shall, as law abiding Anambrarians shall have recourse to due process to contain and checkmate this unprovoked illegality,” he said.
A recent social media post by Ebuka Onyekwelu has also sparked concerns about the government’s actions in Anambra State. The post shows agents of the government sealing the office of Chief Edozie Njoku, the leader of a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
Onyekwelu questioned the government’s motives, asking: “Why is the government heating up the polity with this clear illegality and high-handedness?”
The post further noted that the Labour Party office is located next to the sealed APGA office, raising questions about the government’s intentions and whether this action is an attempt to intimidate political opponents.
Onyekwelu’s post concludes by asking if such actions should be condoned in the political sphere, especially at this time.
