The Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has called Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, to use the opportunity of the constitutional amendments to take a stand on the creation of state police.
Abbas made the call in Birnin Kebbi during the 14th combined convocation of Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic held on Tuesday to award diplomas and higher national diploma to 4,888 graduates of the institution.
Abbas who was a guest at the occasion also urged traditional rulers in the state to brace up for the upcoming constitutional amendments which will give them opportunity to seek a defined role for them as fathers in the country.
The speaker explained that the essence of the constitutional amendments is to re-engineer the only supreme law book in Nigeria which is gradually becoming mundane due to growing needs to add and subtract many things to ensure fairness for all Nigerians.
He tasked the students of the polytechnic to use the training by the institution to be become self-reliant; not roaming the streets in search of jobs when they are practically equipped with skills to become employers of labour instead of being job seekers.
The convocation also featured the conferment of fellowship of Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic to Governor Idris, CEO BUA Cement Abdul Samad and the late emir of Gwandu, Haruna Rasheed posthumously.
Earlier, in his speech, the rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Usman Abubakar Tunga thanked the governor for his contribution, he also described the convocation as necessary as it has not held over six years hence the reason to combine it.
Tungu who lamented the state of polytechnic staff quarters appealed to the federal government to renovate them as they have not been touched since they were built in 1976.
The representative of President Tinubu, minister of state for Education, Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, said that the federal government is ready to adequately fund Polytechnic education for self-reliance and to develop human capital to create wealth .
He added the federal government will soon implement the white-paper on Nigerian Polytechnic to iron out gray areas.
He reiterated the commitment of the federal government to wiping out the menace of out-of-school children in the country as the federal ministry of education will construct e- library and ultra modern students hostel for Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic.
