365Daily – The Federal Government will today, Tuesday, October 4, 2022, present a certificate of registration to the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA), a breakaway faction of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
A statement signed by the Deputy Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Oshundun Olajide, made available to journalists on Tuesday, stated that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, will do the presentation.
CONUA, a breakaway faction of ASUU that is active in a few federal universities, is led by its National Coordinator, ‘Niyi Sunmonu, a lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
The message by the Ministry of Labour read: “The Honorable Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige cordially invites you to the recognition and presentation of Certificate of Registration to the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA).
ASUU and the Federal Government have been unable to resolve their differences that led to a strike of the union on February 14.
The government had taken ASUU to the National Industrial Court which ruled on September 21, 2022, that the university lecturers should return to work. However, the lecturers have refused to comply with the ruling.
Instead, the union chose to file an appeal against the court ruling last week.
