365Daily– Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, has disclosed that amendments to the Electoral Act amendment bill will commence tomorrow, Wednesday, January 19, 2022.
He made this known in his remarks at the resumption of plenary from the Christmas break on Tuesday, January 18, 2022.
President Muhammadu Buhari withheld assent to the Electoral Act amendment bill passed by the National Assembly in December, 2021, citing opposition to compulsory direct primaries by political parties as contained in the document, as one of the reasons.
Gbajabiamila assured that the amendment process will be fast, while noting that the nation could not afford to “throw the baby with the bath water”.
Speaking on the bill, he disagreed that political parties’ improper membership registration was among President Buhari’s reasons for withholding assent, saying that would be at variance with the spirit and letters of Nigeria’s Constitution.
