365Daily – A student of the Kaduna State College of Nursing and Midwifery has been confirmed dead after been caught in a fire outbreak caused by a spark from an extension box.
The deceased student, Lydia Dantata, and about 9 other students of the school were caught in the fire at the petrol station opposite their school where they had gone to charge their phones on May 18, 2021.
Due to the state-wide power outage occasioned by the National Labour Congress (NLC) strike in Kaduna State last week, their school was without electricity, so they had gone to the petrol station to charge their phone batteries.
Unfortunately, the extension box they tried to plug their phones in sparked and caught fire as a tanker was discharging petrol at the station.
Dantata died at the Jos University Teaching University (JUTH) where she was receiving treatment alongside the other students.
While five of the. were still receiving treatment at the General Hospital, Kafanchan, three others were moved to other places for medical attention.
The overseer of the campus, Mr Ephraim Dyages, explained: “Two students were taken to JUTH, and unfortunately we lost one of them and the others are at the General Hospital, Kafanchan.
“The cases of five students taken to the General Hospital, Kafanchan, can be managed there though their injuries were not minor.
“Initially, there were eight students at the hospital, but the parents of three of them requested to take them elsewhere for treatment.”
