General Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, 37, son of Chad’s slain leader, Idriss Deby Itno, is to take over as president in place of his father, according to a charter released Wednesday, April 21, 2021, by the presidency.
AFP reports that Mahamat was named transitional leader as head of a military council on Tuesday, following his father’s death, and will “occupy the functions of the president of the republic” and also serve as head of the armed forces.
Deby died on Monday from gunshot injuries sustained at the battle front while attempting to push back rebels from the capital, N’Djamena.
He was preparing to be sworn in for a sixth term as the President of Chad, having been declared winner of the April 11 presidential poll a day earlier.
