Worshippers at All Saints Methodist Church, Mararaba, Nasarawa State on Sunday marked this year’s Culture Sunday by dressing in cultural attires to Service.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Church has set aside one Sunday in every December to celebrate its cultural day.
NAN reports that the different tribal associations in the Church usually encourage their members to dress in their traditional attires for the event aimed at boosting cultural renaissance.
In his sermon, Rev. Andrew Mameh explained that the cultural displays were to acknowledge people’s different cultural backgrounds in the midst of modernity.
The cleric said that before the advent of western education and culture, Nigerians had their respective tribal dresses that they wore to occasions, especially places of worship.
“It is believed that the Western culture supersedes our own, but that is not correct,” he said.
Ms Oluchi Jacobs, a member of the Church, said the significance of the celebration could not be overemphasised as it had helped people to know more about their natural culture before the coming of western civilisation.
“The significance of today’s service is that it helps us to know more about our culture; we are weaving Christianity into our culture. It is helping us to know how to serve God without compromising our culture.
“We want to harmonise our culture and Christianity to help us serve God better, ” she said. (NAN)
